Volunteer Saturdays

Volunteer Saturdays are a chance to give back while helping care for one of Austin Garden Collective's many community gardens. Held most Saturdays from May through September in Chicago's Austin neighborhood, these volunteer events are open to everyone. Volunteers of all ages and experience levels are welcome to join us—whether you're an experienced gardener or trying it for the first time.

What You'll Help With

Volunteer activities may include weeding, planting, watering, harvesting, mulching, general garden maintenance and seasonal projects. Activities vary from week to week based on the needs of each garden, so every volunteer experience is a little different.

What to Wear & Bring

To help you stay safe and comfortable while volunteering, we recommend bringing or wearing the following:

Wear:

  • Closed-toe shoes or boots

  • Comfortable clothing that you don't mind getting dirty

  • Long pants and a long-sleeved shirt to help protect against scrapes from weeds and other plants

We Provide:

  • Gardening gloves

  • Water

  • Light snacks

Optional Items:

  • Reusable water bottle

  • Sunscreen

  • Hat

  • Any other items that will help you stay comfortable outdoors

Rain Policy

  • Volunteer Saturdays are held rain or shine. Light rain will not affect scheduled activities; however, events may be canceled if severe weather, including heavy rain or thunderstorms, makes it unsafe to proceed.

  • If an event is canceled or delayed, updates will be posted on social media and sent to registered volunteers.
